Astronaut Discloses Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a online statement, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following achieving her goal, she has stated the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the mission, including elevated attention for her scientific work and platforms for her activism.
The Historic Journey
The self-operating New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The diverse crew also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.
The company behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
