Qatar's Sprint Race and Grand Prix Grid Setting: Real-Time Coverage

Opening Notes

The author is arriving soon to guide you through today's short race (14:00 GMT) and grid-setting session (18:00 GMT).

Current Events

Starting Lap Period

The warm-up lap has begun.

Circuit Details

There are 19 laps of the longest circuit in F1, the commentator informs us.

Final Moments

The countdown is underway.

Driver Situation

An advantage in Max Verstappen's favour: his teammate Yuki Tsunoda is in front of him by a single position. He is unlikely to interfere with Red Bull's lead driver.

Media Conversations

Sky speaking with Sky now: Gary Neville is at the Mercedes team.

Karun Chandhok is jumping ahead to the 2026 season, interviewing Adrian Newey about his stepping up to Aston Martin team principal.

Starting Positions

There are only sixteen vehicles on the grid. It was another poor grid-setting session for Lewis Hamilton: after coming twentieth and final in the previous race, resulting in an eighth position in the grand prix, he did not manage to make it out of Q1 again on the previous day. Ferrari have consequently adjusted to his setup and so he begins from the pit lane.

Aston Martin's Lance Stroll and the Alpine pair of Gasly and Colapinto are all starting from the same position.

Driver Comments

"We take the experience for the next day," states Hadjar, starting eleventh. Expect plenty of learning.

Team Standings

It's not all about the individual championship: McLaren have dominated the constructors' gong but Mercedes, with a forty-point advantage over their rivals, are aiming to seal second place this weekend. Russell can assist in this goal from second place, and Kimi Antonelli will begin immediately after Verstappen.

Previous Results

Piastri was victorious then – as he managed last year, too. McLaren's Australian is going for a third consecutive win.

Sprint Race Value

Right, approximately 20 minutes to go till the short race begins. Barring disaster, it's greatest value is as an indication of what is to come, instead of significant in its own right, with only eight points available to the victor. Mind you, second place in this race was enough for the driver to claim the title two years ago.
