White House Announces Federal Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Nears Third Week
The White House confirmed the start of government employee terminations on the end of the week, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to extend into its third consecutive week.
Official Announcement and Initial Details
Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official process for letting employees go.
Although Vought provided no details on which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Additionally, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union for federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be impacted by the reduction in force.
Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges
Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the moves in the legal system.
“It is disgraceful that the government has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to illegally fire numerous employees who provide critical services to the public across the country,” said Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.
The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Political Standoff and Funding Battle
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved soon.
During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

Impact on Workers
These terminations occurred on the same day that government employees got only a incomplete payment for the end of the previous month but excluding the beginning of October, since funding lapsed at the beginning of the period.
A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s impact on government workers.
“It is wrong to make government staff suffer because our leaders in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our federal operations open and operational,” Stier said. The flight regulators, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and food inspectors are not at fault for this government shutdown.”
The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid amid the shutdown.
